Fire sprinklers prevent damage, save lives, and protect firefighters, as shown by a recent fire in a flat in Ilford, London. A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said, ‘Sprinklers are not a luxury – they save lives.’ The sprinkler system activated quickly and minimized property damage, stopping the fire from spreading further.
According to an incident report from London Fire Brigade, the fire started in a ground-floor flat. The sprinkler system extinguished most of the flames before crews arrived. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus put out the remaining fire. Only a small part of the five-room flat suffered damage, and no one reported injuries.
The London Fire Brigade spokesperson added that very few buildings in London have sprinkler systems, and the Brigade wants that number to rise. Automatic Fire Suppression Systems, including sprinklers, play a major role in reducing the impact of fires on people, property, homes, and communities. They also lower the risks faced by firefighters during an incident.
The Brigade received the call on 27 July at 22:36 and brought the fire under control by 23:58. Four fire engines and about 25 firefighters from Ilford, Stratford, and East Ham stations responded. Investigators are currently looking into the cause of the fire.
