Project Details

Moorfields Eye Hospital is a world leading specialist healthcare facility providing critical clinical services within a complex operational environment. The nature of the building, combined with vulnerable occupants, specialist medical equipment, and continuous service delivery, required a carefully managed approach to fire and life safety that prioritised patient safety, staff protection, and uninterrupted clinical operation.

The project demanded a high level of coordination and control to ensure fire safety considerations were fully integrated without impacting day to day hospital activities. Maintaining compliance while supporting ongoing healthcare delivery was a key driver throughout the works.

Our involvement focused on the provision of project services and fire and life safety consultancy support, ensuring that fire safety requirements were embedded within the project delivery process. This included coordination between stakeholders, technical oversight, and alignment with relevant healthcare fire safety guidance and UK regulatory requirements.

Particular attention was given to managing interfaces between construction activities and live hospital operations, ensuring risks were controlled and safety standards maintained at all times.

Pre Construction Phase Design

During the pre construction phase, our team supported the development and coordination of fire safety strategies aligned with the operational needs of a live healthcare environment.

This included review and coordination of proposed works against existing fire safety arrangements, identification of potential risks to patients and staff, and development of mitigation strategies to ensure continuity of care.

Design coordination focused on ensuring that any changes or temporary arrangements maintained compliance and did not compromise evacuation strategies, compartmentation, or system performance.

The pre construction phase established a clear framework for safe and compliant delivery within a highly sensitive clinical setting.

Pre Construction Phase Documentation and Planning

In parallel with design coordination activities, a structured suite of pre construction documentation was developed to support safe delivery and quality assurance.

This included preparation and review of technical documentation outlining scope, responsibilities, and compliance with applicable fire safety standards and healthcare guidance.

Risk Assessment Method Statements were reviewed and developed to address the specific challenges of working within an occupied hospital, including infection control, restricted access, patient movement, and coordination with clinical teams.

Inspection and verification processes were defined to ensure works were carried out in accordance with agreed fire safety requirements.

A coordinated programme was also developed to align construction activities with hospital operations, minimising disruption and maintaining a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

Through proactive project services support, close stakeholder coordination, and continued technical oversight, the works were delivered in a controlled and compliant manner, supporting the ongoing operation of a critical healthcare facility while maintaining the highest standards of fire and life safety.
